(Sarajevo, May 5, 2019) – The Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on May 5, 2019 has organized an event due to the World Metrology Day on May 15, 2019, dedicated to the redefinition of SI units in the metrology system, the achievements of the Institute and its 125 years of existence.

The event was attended by numerous business partners of the Institute, representatives of the academic community, government and business sector.  The redefinition of the SI units in the metrology system, which was officially adopted last year, and will be in use all over the world since May 20, was in the spotlight of the event.

Four of the seven main units, those used to measure the mass (kilogram), electrical currents (ampere), temperatures (kelvin) and the amount of substance (mole) are redefined using "fundamental natural constants" to increase their accuracy and enable the measurements that are the same always and everywhere.

Dominik Pražak, a representative of the Czech Metrology Institute, explained that the redefinition of the SI measurement units abolished the binding of definitions for an artifact, and instead they are related to the basic constants that describe and quantify well-explained physical laws.

Within the event, the activities and services of the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina were presented, as well as numerous achievements until today.

In  five years, the Institute has implemented 25  3-year research projects funded by the European Commission in a consortium with the  institutes from Great Britain, Germany, Italy ... It is a member of the most important international metrology organizations, cooperates with a large number of countries, mostly with the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Germany and Turkey. In doing so, BiH is the only country that has signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation with all three of the strongest countries in the world - America, China and Russia.

According to the research metrology, out of of 38 state institutes, the Institute of Metrology of BiH ranked among the top 12, and in just 6 years earned the international recognition for 67 different metrological and calibration possibilities.

"By 2012, we did not have a single laboratory whose results one has to accept. Today we have 67 calibration and measurement capabilities that are recognized globally and the certificates we issue in these laboratories have to be accepted around the whole world, and we are currently among the top 45 in the world, "said Director Džemić.

One of the main partners of the Institute of Metrology BiH is the Czech Metrology Institute, with which the cooperation was established in 2014. "From 2014 until today, projects in worth about 1.5 million euros have been implemented. This is an excellent collaboration between two professional institutes. We are currently finishing our second project and it is certain that this cooperation will continue”, said Anesa Terza Vukovic, coordinator for development cooperation projects at the Embassy of the Czech Republic in BiH.

One of the most important partners of IMBiH is “Sarajevogas” who, together with the Institute, plans a joint project of building a laboratory in real terms.  “If this project succeeds, BiH will be among the first in the region when this type of questioning is in question," said director of “Sarajevogas” Nihada Glamoč, and emphasized that measurement in this company is the most important function. When it comes to measuring the quantity of gas in the right way and the more accurately, it can be said that the job was done in the right way. Since the introduction of the 1995 measurement system, “Sarajevogas” has been working intensively with IMBiH, which provides him with very significant support.

Mustafa Musić, the Head of the Sector for Strategic Development in Elektroprivreda BiH, said that the Institute of Metrology of BiH will have an increasing role and importance when it comes to the electricity sector and added: "The Institute will have an increasing role and importance in what we call intense and very the turbulent transition of the energy system because something that was 10 or 15 years ago was unthinkable is happening now. New technologies are increasingly present in the energy sector and they bring new demands with them, from the new procedures, new and equipped laboratories, to the professional and educated personnel. "

On this occasion, collaborators and partners of the Institute were awarded with Certificates of Acknowledgement for contributing to the development of the metrology sector.
