"Training on mathematical and software tools - Software RealMass" was held in Sarajevo from November 7 to 9, 2022. This training was organized within the project EMPIR 19RPT02 RealMass "Improvement of the realization of the mass scale" which is a part of European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research. The host of this training was the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This three-year project started in 2020 and aims to develop measurement capacities in the realization and dissemination of a mass scale in the range of 1 mg - 20 kg with measurement uncertainties of 0.001 mg - 3 mg or better. The project also aims to develop reproducible calibration methods and a draft EURAMET calibration guide, as well as suitable mathematical tools based on the least squares method and on the equipment used for mass unit dissemination.
Participants from all 11 national metrology institutes which form the consortium of this project took part in the training: CMI, Czech Republic (coordinator, leader of the work package - WP4 and WP5), BEV-PTP, Austria (leader of the work package - WP1), IMBiH, Bosnia and Herzegovina (work package leader – WP2), INRIM, Italy (work package leader – WP3), BIM, Bulgaria, SMD, Belgium, INM-RO, Romania, DMDM, Serbia, ME-BoM, North Macedonia, NSAI, Ireland and NSC- IM, Ukraine.
The training was organized as part of the work package WP4 Impact and included an overview of the mathematical and software tools for the calibration method for the realization of the mass scale, which is used for the calibration of the mass standard with high accuracy, the evaluation of the measurement results, the use of the new Software RealMass and analysis of its validation. The preparation of Software RealMass is part of work package 3 and the national metrology institute of Italy, INRIM is in charge of it. This software is in preparation and version 7 has been presented and analyzed. After the project Software RealMass will be publicly available for use. The representative of BEV-PTP, Austria, held a presentation on the ideas for improving the designs (matrix for the realization of the mass scale), and the approach to the work on the preparation of the draft EURAMET calibration guideline for the realization of the mass scale in the range from 1 mg to 20 kg, which is part of work package 1 and which will have a significant impact considering that this type of EURAMET guideline is being prepared for the first time. The training included examples of calculations and discussions about them. During this meeting, other current activities on the project, which are part of work package 2, were discussed: Follow-up case study led by CMI, EURAMET Pilot Study 1556 led by IMBiH, as well as Long-term Strategy led by ME-BoM.
The participants visited the Laboratory for Mass and Related Quantities of the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is a participant in this project, as well as the other laboratories of the Institute, and briefly were informed on their activities.
