Worldwide, people are exposed to radiation from the environment and more than 23 million people worldwide are exposed to ionizing radiation in the workplace. In order to better protect against radiation, European regulations on radiation protection are becoming more strict and more sophisticated.

Innovative technological developments may comprise new radiation exposure scenarios. Measures to respond to new needs include increasingly restrictive exposure limits, the introduction of reference values for activity concentration, and enhanced quality assurance requirements for legal dose assessment.

The European Metrology Network (EMN) on Radiation Protection responds to these developments and aims to act as a single point of contact to cover metrology requirements related to radiation protection.

In order to enable quality assurance in this area, the network will foster a harmonized, sustainable, coordinated and smartly specialized infrastructure to support the needs expressed by stakeholders and in the European radiation protection regulations.

A special focus of the EMN will be to work with regulators to actively contribute to the creation of new and revision of existing standards.

The Laboratory for Ionizing Radiation of the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina is one of the founders of the European Metrology Network for Radiation Protection, which was established on September 16, 2021. The first members of this network are the national metrology institutes PTB (Germany), NPL (United Kingdom), Vinča (Serbia), IMBiH (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and IFIN-HH (Romania) as well as the Bundesamt für Strahlenschutz (BfS). radiation protection.

The EMN for radiation protection has become one of the nine metrology networks established by EURAMET - the European Association of National Metrology Institutes - in the past three years and which have the task of analyzing metrology needs in the relevant areas at European and global level and responding to those needs.
