The Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the University of Ljubljana on April 18, 2017.

The Memorandum was signed by the director of IMBiH, Zijad Džemić and the Dean of Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Prof. Dr. Igor Papič and Head of the Department of Measurement and Robotics, Prof. Dr. Janko Drnovšek.

Cooperation between these two institutions began more than ten years ago when Prof. Dr. Drnovšek, as one of the leading experts in developing metrology in the European Union, was hired to work on several projects by the European Union. He monitored the development of metrology in the region, reported back to European bodies and through his selfless work and engagement provided assistance in setting up and developing state metrology systems.

The cooperation between the Institute, Prof. Dr. Drnovšek, and the Faculty continued through regional projects within EURAMET financed by the German National Metrology Institute (PTB). Prof. Dr. Drnovšek and former director of Austrian Federal Office of Metrology and Surveying (BEV), Mr. Arnold Leitner established focus groups with the aim of speeding up the development of metrology infrastructure in developing countries. The Institute has benefited greatly from this program. This was one of the key projects responsible for the overall development of the Institute and its current capabilities.

Thanks to the involvement and perseverance of Prof. Dr. Drnovšek a program within the EURAMET supporting research projects and development of the capacity of the institutions were established with the aim of ensuring continuity in providing assistance to institutions of developing countries. Though this program, the Institute has once again seized many opportunities for its further development. In the last four years alone, the Institute has been selected in seven consortia of state institutes in order to carry out three-year projects from various fields of metrology.

Through the cooperation with the individual laboratories of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana, the Institute has already managed to improve the development of the Laboratory for Temperature and Humidity. In the future, cooperation in the field of development of reference laboratory for light, sound, quality of electrical energy, energy efficiency, calibration of thermal imaging cameras, etc is planned.

The signing of MoU followed the implementation of numerous projects of education, calibration, intercomparison, joint work on projects, working on achieving specific strategic goals, etc. The institute hopes the cooperation will expand to some areas that represent a scientific challenge to the Faculty itself.

Prof. Dr. Drnovšek and his associates, especially Prof. Dr. Papič, the Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, showed openness, dedication, and sincerity in providing unselfish assistance to the Institute. They are the longest and the most stable supporters of the Institute’s work so far.
