In the "Official Gazette of BiH", No. 40/26, the new Law on Measurement Units in Bosnia and Herzegovina was published, which replaced the previous Law on Measurement Units of Bosnia and Herzegovina ("Official Gazette of BiH", No. 19/01).
The Institute of Metrology of BiH has prepared the Draft of the new Law on BiH Units of Measurement with the aim of harmonization of domestic legislation with the acquis of the EU and changes in the International System of Units of Measurement (SI). The draft was adopted by the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 8, 2025, and officially by the House of Representatives and the House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina on May 14, 2026.
The Law on Units of Measurement in Bosnia and Herzegovina regulates the legal units of measurement in Bosnia and Herzegovina, their names and symbols, areas and manner of application and obligations for their use in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and harmonises national legislation with the EU acquis.
This law fully implements Directive 80/181/EEC, Directive 2009/3/EC and Directive (EU) 2019/1258, which regulate the aforementioned area in the EU. On 20 May 2019, the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (Bureau International des Poids et Mesures - BIPM) officially adopted new definitions of certain base units of measurement in the SI system (BIPM SI Brochure: The International System of Units, 9th Edition), and the EU subsequently published amendments to Directive 80/181/EEC, namely the amendment, Directive (EU) 2019/1258, which concerns essential changes in the definition of base SI units and other significant changes and improvements.
The new Law on Units of Measurement in Bosnia and Herzegovina establishes full harmonization with EU legislation and the International System of Units (SI).
