Training on Precious Metal Testing Held for the Bureau of Metrology of North Macedonia

In the period from 13 to 15 May 2026, upon the request of the National Metrology Institute of North Macedonia – Bureau of Metrology (https://www.bom.gov.mk), a training course on “Testing of Precious Metals” was conducted in North Macedonia. The training was organized and delivered with the aim of strengthening capacities in the field of testing and quality control of precious metal items, in line with the needs and request of the host institution.

The training programme included a combination of theoretical lectures and practical work, with particular emphasis on the transfer of knowledge and experience of IMBIH experts in the field of precious metals testing, in accordance with applicable international standards and accreditation requirements.

The main topics covered during the training included:

-       key concepts of metrological traceability, as well as validation and verification of test methods; 

-       practical application of the EN ISO 11426 standard: Jewellery — Determination of gold in gold jewellery alloys — Cupellation method (fire assay), i.e. the cupellation method for determining gold content in jewellery alloys; 

-       practical application of the EN ISO 11427 standard: Jewellery — Determination of silver in silver jewellery alloys — Volumetric (potentiometric) method, i.e. the volumetric (potentiometric) method for determining silver content in jewellery alloys; 

-       practical application of the EDXRF measurement technique in the testing of precious metal items. 

The conducted training represents an important step in strengthening and further developing inter-institutional cooperation between the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Bureau of Metrology of North Macedonia. Through the exchange of professional knowledge and practical experience, both institutions continue to contribute to the development of metrology and the assurance of quality in the field of precious metals testing in the region.
