Every year, on 20 May, World Metrology Day is celebrated as an opportunity to highlight the essential role of measurement in modern society and the importance of international cooperation that ensures measurements are reliable and comparable worldwide.

This year’s theme of World Metrology Day, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making”, highlights the connection between science, governance and public trust, as well as the importance of continuous, often invisible work that enables decisions to be made with confidence.

Reliable measurements provide the foundation for decision-making in addressing complex challenges – from protecting public health and safety to managing energy systems, monitoring the environment and ensuring the proper functioning of markets. When data are accurate, comparable and traceable, decisions are made with greater confidence and trust.

Trust is further strengthened when measurements, in addition to being scientifically sound, are applied within a clear and reliable legal framework. Such measurements form the basis for sound decision-making, a stable society and a well-functioning market.

This day is an opportunity for the metrology community to reflect on the role of reliable measurements in shaping decisions, and to recognise the importance of cooperation and shared commitment that enable the building of this trust.
