Commissioning of a New X-ray Calibration System for Mammography

Director of the State Regulatory Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ivan Lasic, and Director of the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milica Ristovic Krstic, attended today the commissioning of the state-of-the-art X-ray calibration system for calibration in mammography radiation beams, with an estimated value of approximately EUR 300,000. The procurement of this equipment was implemented within the project "Strengthening State Regulatory Infrastructure for Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety in Compliance with IAEA Standards" (BOH9013), funded by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The State Regulatory Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety of Bosnia and Herzegovina played a central role in the nomination and implementation of the project, acting as a key link between the IAEA and national institutions, including the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The equipment was successfully delivered and installed at the Laboratory for Ionizing Radiation of the Institute of Metrology of BiH in Banjaluka.

Thanks to this valuable donation, the Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina further strengthened its technical capacities. This contribution represents an important step in reinforcing the national infrastructure for radiation protection and nuclear safety, as well as improving the quality of services provided by the Institute to the healthcare sector.

The implementation of this equipment ensures reliable support to healthcare institutions in quality control and safety assurance of mammography systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The system enables the establishment and realization of standard radiation qualities for mammography (RQR-M and RQA-M), in accordance with international recommendations. This provides reference conditions for the precise calibration of dosimeters and measuring instruments used in the control and verification of the operation of clinical mammography equipment.
